Kilroy claims to help small businesses, but her vote on health care suggests otherwise
COLUMBUS - Congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy claims she's trying to do all she can for small businesses in Central Ohio.
She's eager to try and spin it that way - whether it's through press releases or through the $337,713 in taxpayer dollars she spent on tele-town hall meetings, automated phone calls, and glossy mailers.
And it seems her messaging has taken on greater urgency as Kilroy, a Democrat, finds herself locked in a hotly contested race with Republican Steve Stivers in the 15th District seat. In fact, she is considered by pundits as one of the most vulnerable House members this November.
The link below to a story in The Associated Press on the healthcare overhaul - which Kilroy voted for - reveals why her claims just don't add up, Stivers spokesman John Damschroder said.
"Apparently, she went over the health care legislation as carefully as she read the Stimulus Bill that handed out big AIG bonuses," Damschroder said. "This bill picks winners and losers and at the end of the day hurts small businesses while adding to our massive national debt."
The AP story shows how a small family business in Illinois essentially would need to lay off workers and cut wages to qualify for a tax credit supposedly intended to help small businesses.
"But rather than fully examine what the bill would do, Congresswoman Kilroy dutifully towed the party line for Speaker Nancy Pelosi and voted for the overhaul without apparently understanding its implications for small business," he said. "That's one of the reasons Steve is running for Congress - we need someone in Washington who will cast votes in our interests - and not in the interests of Speaker Pelosi and those out of touch with our values."
