Stivers Outraises Kilroy for a Fourth Consecutive Reporting Period

Kilroy, Stivers both try to flex fundraising muscle

The Columbus Dispatch
WASHINGTON - It is a case of campaign cash one-upsmanship.
Democrats this week touted how much campaign cash Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy raised in the third quarter - about $603,000, an impressive sum. But then it turned out that the campaign of GOP rival Steve Stivers boasted of an even-bigger haul - about $757,000.
The filing deadline for third-quarter reports isn't until Oct. 15, but it isn't unusual for candidates and parties to selectively release numbers in a bid to show political strength or quash fears of foundering campaigns.
Kilroy, of Columbus, barely beat Stivers in 2008 to capture the 15th District seat left vacant by former GOP Rep. Deborah Pryce of Upper Arlington. The race is considered by several nonpartisan analysts to be one of the most at-risk Democratic seats in the nation.
Showing that Kilroy will have the resources to air her case to voters appeared to be the motivation behind whichever "campaign adviser" spread the word of her fundraising success to the National Journal's Hotline on Call. Kilroy's $603,000 is more than twice what she raised in the second quarter.
But Stivers spokesman John Damschroder said yesterday that his candidate raised more than $757,000 during the third quarter, noting that is the fourth consecutive reporting period during which Stivers has raised more money than Kilroy.
